Drive Through and other "modified" trees
on Postcards and Photographs, along the Redwood Highway,
US 101 north of San Francisco - the "Avenue of the Giants"

These pages were designed by Jarl de Boer:
I have lived in Northern California since 1949.
I've been fascinated by these drive-through trees since my
first drive through the Wawona Tree in late summer of that year.

This page lists the trees, attractions, and the towns located along the
Redwood Highway. Printed out, it can be used as a "travelogue" which you can follow
as you travel along US 101 in a northbound direction from the San Francisco area..

If you enter the region southbound, just read from the bottom up.

I have researched quite a bit of history on many of these trees and would
enjoy corresponding with anyone with the same interest.

She has lived in the immediate area for many years, and her latest three books
about the Highway and it's towns and attractions in Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte Counties
are profusely illustrated with old photographs and postcard images, some from my collection,
but many many others which are of great historical interest.

If you have an interest in visiting Northern California as a tourist,
and would like help with directions to any of these sites, either while here or in planning,

The REDWOOD HIGHWAY, US-101, Northern California.(Mendocino-Humboldt county line) (Humboldt-Del Norte county line) The Redwood Highway turns N.E. here on State Route 199, the following 4 sites are on US 101 "SR199 to the Oregon State Line" (replaced with individual pages)
While I've visited most of these sites over the last 50 years - and some of them quite recently,
I'd be glad to hear from anyone with current information on any of them. I know, for instance,
that the He/She is gone, the Coolidge and Goose Pen Trees have been cut down,
and the Stump House burned in 1998.
(†) = definitely no longer there.
