Richardson Grove is located in
Humboldt County, just north of the Mendocino County line, on the
old Redwood Highway.
On early cards, the venue is listed as Humboldt State Park. It was established in 1922 at 120 acres and named for Friend W. Richardson, the 25th Governor of California. The Save the Redwoods League has been instrumental in both urging the original land acquisition and in purchases that have increased Park size to over 1000 acres. Nearly all of the original tourist facilities that appear on these cards have been removed in recent years to lessen human activity impact, but the old Lodge now houses the Park Visitor Center and Gift Shop, and you can still visit the Walk-Thru tree next to the V.C. The Fallen Giant (which was a major exhibit from the date it fell in 1933) no longer seems to be there. I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or postcard images! |
