The Coolidge Tree was located in
Coolidge Park near Leggett California on (old) US 101, the
Redwood Highway, in Mendocino County about 200 miles north of
San Francisco
On earlier cards it is listed as being in Coolidge Redwood Park and on later cards as in Underwood Park. On a visit to the Chandelier Tree in 1993, none of the personnel knew of the Coolidge or its whereabouts. In mid August 1998, I received the following message from the friend of a member of the Underwood family: "The Coolidge Tree was cut out in the early 'teens and the hole was enlarged circa 1925/27. About 1939 the family decided the tree was going to fall down and they could do nothing to stop it so they cut it down. It is on the ground behind the schoolhouse now. The family then cut through the Chandelier Tree and started over with the new attraction". During an Easter 2001 trip, we searched the area thoroughly and have concluded that the only possible site of the Coolidge was what is now the athletic field behind the Leggett School and that nothing remains. I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or postcards or images! |
