Coolidge Park was located in
Mendocino County, just south of Leggett, on the old Redwood
Highway near the intersection of US 101 and State Route 1.
Until 1939, Coolidge Park was the location of another, different, drive-through tree called the Coolidge Tree . (Just click the link to view the page showing images of 20+ cards featuring that tree). Coolidge Park also offered lodging in cabins as well as a camp ground. Near the end of 1938 it was renamed Underwood Park. |

Underwood Park is located on the
old Redwood Highway near the intersection of US 101 and State
Route 1. Driving northbound, you will see a "Drive Through Tree Road"
exit off the freeway. The Coolidge Tree was cut down at about
the same time that the name was changed to Underwood Park near
the end of 1938. The Maj. I.C. Hendricks Tree was tunneled at
that time and renamed "Chandelier Tree".
Underwood now holds the southernmost and "best" of the 3 drive-through trees available along the Redwood Highway, based on condition of the trees, ease of access and alignment in driving through, It also has great angles available for photography. Underwood Park today has no accomodations and offers only the Chandelier Tree and a comprehensive gift shop. There is a small per car admission charge I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or images! |
