The Goose Pen Tree is located
at what was once called Lane's Redwood Flat and is now named
Smithe Grove, a unit of the California State Park system.
Goose pen trees are fire-hollowed Redwoods, so called after the use to which they were put by local farmers. Lane's Redwood Flat was a major tourist attraction, lodging, and bus-stop on the Redwood Highway from the time it opened around 1920. Be sure to visit the pages for Lane's, immediately following theses pages, it was much photographed and I have nearly 100 cards showing most aspects of this well developed tourist area. Two of the Goose Pen Tree openings were enlarged so that they could serve as interesting "doorways" to shops. The one shown on cards is located immediately adjacent to the old parking area and bus stop. Lane's was badly damaged in the flood of 1955 but survived until the flood of 1964, when most of the remaining buildings were destroyed while the Goose Pen Trees survived. The land was eventually purchased for donation to the state, but later, unfortunately, the two trees were vandalized by eco-nazis and had to be topped so they would not fall unexpectedly after dying. The second row has photographs I took in 1998 which show the damage. The two stumps are accessible, with one tree (the one on these cards) very near the Grove parking lot, and the other a short distance down a trail. I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or additional postcards or images!
