The "Old" Town of Klamath, was located
on the Redwood Highway in Del Norte County about 65 miles north
of Eureka.
The town was badly damaged in the 1955 floods and then almost completely destroyed in the Christmas floods of 1964. Virtually nothing remains on the original townsite except for a camping ground operating out of a trailer, but there is a thriving Indian town located out of the flood plain on the other side of the present highway as you enter Del Norte County on the new bridge. The Redwood Highway crossed the Klamath River on the Douglas Memorial Bridge immediately south of the Klamath townsite. The Bridge was damaged in 1955 and almost completely destroyed in 1964. The abutment and bears at the Humboldt (south) end have been preserved as a memorial, and the two bears that were at the Klamath (town) end are placed along the road going East from the new Klamath settlement. I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or postcard images! |
