Trees of Mystery, on the Redwood Highway

Trees of Mystery is located about 5 miles north of the town of Klamath, on the Redwood Highway in Del Norte County, about 70 miles north of Eureka.

It is a well-developed "tourist trap" which displays a few large Redwoods and many other trees species that have grown from and over fallen redwood "nurse logs". To lure you in (and especially the kids), there's a large carved Paul Bunyan (which has gone through at least 3 varieties), A large carved "Babe" - his blue ox, and a fallen hollow redwood trunk which has been arranged to serve as an entrance after you have paid for admission.

Inside, the sights include octopus trees, a tree cathedral (formed when a central redwood dies or is cut, and a ring of "suckers grows around the original), large redwoods, a fern grove and various distorted trees stunted by different natural causes.

The Octopus Tree(s) and the Entrance Log have their own pages, and some other cards dating back to the times when the attraction was known as "Wonderland Redwood Park" and "Big Tree Park" are shown on the Requa page.

The three different Paul Bunyans I see on the cards are: 1) Axe at an angle in his outstretched right arm. 2) In his right hand resting on his shoulder. 3) Axe upright on the ground with his left hand resting on it. I'm not certain of the order, but I suspect that I have the sequence right.

I would be very happy to hear more from anyone with further information or postcard images!
